Caution!
By C. Sahu
Normally, I like reviews that give a short outline of the plot of a book or movie, because without that, you don't know whether you'd like to spend the time. However, unless you're really wavering, I would strongly advise that you to read the book before looking at the reviews below -- Ira Levin is THE MASTER of suspense -- like Stephen King says, his plots work like intricate timepieces -- and for maximum enjoyment you should know as little as possible about the book before you start.
Odds are, however, that you already know it's about cloning and Nazis, so I'll go ahead and say this: I put off reading the book for years because I wasn't interested in either of those subjects. But "The Boys" is not what you'd expect at all, and superlatives can't describe Levin's skill. "Couldn't put it down" doesn't touch it.
Plus, any gore or references to sex and violence are only what is necessary for the sake of the plot, which is important as far as I'm concerned.
And, just like with his other books, this is more than just a roller coaster ride that you walk off of and forget. There's satisfying poetic justice, interesting moral contrast, and important ethical questions raised -- not just the usual pronouncements about weren't-the-Nazis-terrible or isn't-cloning-awfully-dangerous, either. It's one of those books you love to discuss with a friend.

Enjoyable
By Bob Hoskins
The story does a nice job of drawing you into the plot. A young boy working clandestinely in South America wiretaps a meeting of some very high level men talking about killing 94 people. As he relays his story, and his recording, over the phone to someone he knows would want to hear it, he is murdered. The story now is about the receiver of the call figuring out the plot and foiling it.

Quite an easy read and the plot is believable. For me though the book lacked character development insomuch as we really aren't given time to get to know the players well enough.

From a cat and mouse standpoint it's a great read. As the tired, overwrought and underfunded hero deciphers the call he almost heard and translates it into a plot that has to be foiled at all costs. His efforts to apprehend the plot perpetrators are quite well thought out.

As I mentioned, an easy read and, a pretty good movie too. Try and read the book before seeing the movie as the book adds some background the movie doesn't.

a somewhat dated yet very enjoyable thriller..
By lazza
The Boys From Brazil is probably better known by its late 1970s screen adaptation than the novel by Ira ("Rosemary's Baby") Levin. Since I hadn't seen the movie I thought I'd give the book a try. And I was pleasently surprised.
The story is about elderly Nazis in Brazil, led by the ingenius yet wicked Mengele, seeking to clone Hitler. In fact they had done this some years back, cloning 94 genetic equivalents of bad ol' Adolph. Now in the mid-1970s they need to embark on a murderous rampage to fulfill their objectives (..no spoilers here). Bring in an aged Nazi hunter from Vienna and we have a tight, compulsively readable little thriller.
Of course we know really that the story deep down is very contrived, even for when it was written (1970s). So I recommend not taking the story too seriously. It is well-written, and there are a couple of most memorable scenes.
Bottom line: bio-terrorism and Nazis. Turn off your brain and enjoy.

Review
My friend Robert Hotchkin has done a masterful job of exposing one of the most subtle and fierce, dark, diabolical enemies of our lives. Good, clear communications are vital and a necessary key to having a growing, maturing relationship in every sphere of life and ministry. Leviathan is a conniving demonic spirit that aims to twist communications. It is time that we learn the signs, step to the plate, and win this battle! --James W. Goll - Encounters Network

In this crucially important book, Leviathan Exposed, Robert Hotchkin unravels this twisted serpent and the way it works. But far more importantly, Robert lays out keys, methods, and amazing strategies all from God s Word to defeat and destroy the works of this serpent. GET THIS BOOK! Pass it out to all your friends, ministry heads, teachers, students, and loved ones. And more importantly, read it yourself! Then TAKE ACTION. Do what it says and watch this evil snake-spirit slither away in utter defeat! Again, PLEASE READ THIS BOOK! --Steve Shultz, THE ELIJAH LIST

As believers, we have an enemy whose sole intent is to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10). When we are aware of his schemes (2 Corinthians 2:11) we realize that our real fight is not against fellow believers, and that God has given all of us powerful weapons that will overcome every plan of the enemy to divide the Church. Robert Hotchkin has written a compelling account, filled with real life examples of how believers can disentangle themselves from the web of communication gone awry. If you have ever been caught in the painful place of twisted communication or false accusation, this book will give you the tools you need to get free. --Stacey Campbell, revivalnow.com

About the Author
In November of 2002, Robert Hotchkin was splitting wood in the mountains of Montana when he was radically saved and forever changed by the first of many encounters with the love of Jesus. He went from being a mocker and persecutor of Christians to a passionate lover of Christ. That passion for the Lord marks his ministry, and it is truly contagious. Robert travels the world, ministering with strong faith, releasing revelation, prophetic decrees, healings, miracles, and the love of God. He is a carrier of the glory and a sparker of revival fires. People have been healed, refreshed, set free, and empowered through his life. His great desire is that every person, city, nation, and region would know that God is good and that He really, really loves them! Robert lives in Arizona with his wife Yu-Ree.

The MOST needed book in every believer's home and every church!!
By Amazon Customer
I started reading this book and could NOT put it down until I'd read the entire book. This resource is needed to equip us in gaining VICTORY over this spirit that IS SEEN in every home and church at one time or another. Families split and don't speak for days and even years because of misunderstandings. Same thing happens in our churches today. You see people sitting on opposite sides of the church refusing to speak to each other. All of us have been in conversation with another person and this spirit takes control and we leave hurt and confused. THIS BOOK gives us an understanding of who this Leviathan spirit is and what his goal is-TO SEPARATE people, families and churches which then interrupts our purpose which is to GLORIFY GOD AND SERVE OTHERS!!! Robert Hotchkin has written the most needed resource on this spirit and the tools we all have as believers to recognize and defeat his influence in our own lives and everywhere we go, be it homes, workplace, public arena or church building. I can't wait to buy several copies of this book to give to families I love who are at the point of giving up. Now, after reading this book, I recognize the spirit causing unhappiness and separation. I wish I could have rated it 1000000 stars. This book is THAT GOOD AND NEEDED!!!!.......Fran Jackson

Agile Software Development, Principles, Patterns, and Practices, by Robert C. Martin

Written by a software developer for software developers, this book is a unique collection of the latest software development methods. The author includes OOD, UML, Design Patterns, Agile and XP methods with a detailed description of a complete software design for reusable programs in C++ and Java. Using a practical, problem-solving approach, it shows how to develop an object-oriented application—from the early stages of analysis, through the low-level design and into the implementation. Walks readers through the designer's thoughts — showing the errors, blind alleys, and creative insights that occur throughout the software design process. The book covers: Statics and Dynamics; Principles of Class Design; Complexity Management; Principles of Package Design; Analysis and Design; Patterns and Paradigm Crossings. Explains the principles of OOD, one by one, and then demonstrates them with numerous examples, completely worked-through designs, and case studies. Covers traps, pitfalls, and work arounds in the application of C++ and OOD and then shows how Agile methods can be used. Discusses the methods for designing and developing big software in detail. Features a three-chapter, in-depth, single case study of a building security system. For Software Engineers, Programmers, and Analysts who want to understand how to design object oriented software with state of the art methods.

Agile development is the ability to develop software quickly, in the face of rapidly changing requirements. In order to achieve this agility, we need to employ practices that provide the necessary discipline and feedback. We need to employ design principles that keep our software flexible and maintainable, and we need to know the design patterns that have been shown to balance those principles for specific problems. This book is an attempt to knit all three of these concepts together into a functioning whole.

This book describes those principles, patterns, and practices and then demonstrates, how they are applied by walking through dozens of different case studies. More importantly, the case studies are not presented as complete works. Rather, they are designs in progress. You will see the designers make mistakes, and you will observe how they identify the mistakes and eventually correct them. You will see them puzzle over conundrums and worry over ambiguities and trade-offs. You will see the act of design.

The Devil Is in the Details

This book contains a lot of Java and C++ code. I hope you will carefully read that code since, to a large degree, the code is the point of the book. The code is the actualization of what this book 6~ '' has to say.

There is a repeating pattern to this book. It consists of a series of case studies of varying sizes. Some are very small, and some require several chapters to describe. Each case study is preceded by /material that is meant to prepare you for it. For example, the Payroll case study is preceded by chapters describing the object-oriented design principles and patterns used in the case study.

The book begins with a discussion of development practices and processes. That discussion is punctuated by a number of small case studies and examples. From there, the book moves on to the topic of design and design principles, and then to some design patterns, more design principles that govern packages, and more patterns. All of these topics are accompanied by case studies.

So prepare yourself to read some code and to pore over some UML diagrams. The book you are about to read is very technical, and its lessons, like the devil, are in the details.

A Little History

Over six years ago, I wrote a book entitled Designing Object-Oriented C++ Applications using the Booch Method. It was something of magnum opus for me, and I was very pleased with the result and with the sales.

This book started out as a second edition to Designing, but that's not how it turned out. Very little remains of the original book in these pages. Little more than three chapters have been carried through, and those chapters have been massively changed. The intent, spirit, and many of the lessons of the book are the same. And yet, I've learned a tremendous amount about software design and development in the six years since Designing came out. This book reflects that learning.

What a half-decade! Designing came out just before the Internet collided with the planet. Since then, the number of abbreviations we have to deal with has doubled. We have Design Patterns, Java, EJB, RMI, J2EE, XML, XSLT, HTML, ASP, JSP, Servlets, Application Servers, ZOPE, SOAP, C#, .NET, etc., etc. Let me tell you, it's been hard to keep the chapters of this book reasonably current!

The Booch Connection

In 1997, I was approached by Grady Booch to help write the third edition of his amazingly successful Object-Oriented Analysis and Design with Applications. I had worked with Grady before on some projects, and I had been an avid reader and contributor to his various works, including UML. So I accepted with glee. I asked my good friend Jim Newkirk to help out with the project.

Over the next two years, Jim and I wrote a number of chapters for the Booch book. Of course, that effort meant that I could not put as much effort into this book as I would have liked, but I felt that the Booch book was worth the contribution. Besides, this book was really just a second edition of Designing at the time, and my heart wasn't in it. If I was going to say something, I wanted to say something new and different.

Unfortunately, that version of the Booch book was not to be. It is hard to find the time to write a book during normal times. During the heady days of the ".com" bubble, it was nearly impossible. Grady got ever busier with Rational and with new ventures like Catapulse. So the project stalled. Eventually, I asked Grady and Addison Wesley if I could have the chapters that Jim and I wrote to include in this book. They graciously agreed. So several of the case study and UML chapters came from that source.

The Impact of Extreme Programming

In late 1998, XP reared its head and challenged our cherished beliefs about software development. Should we create lots of UML diagrams prior to writing any code, or should we eschew any kind of diagrams and just write lots of code? Should we write lots of narrative documents that describe our design, or should we try to make the code narrative and expressive so that ancillary documents aren't necessary? Should we program in pairs? Should we write tests before we write production code? What should we do?

This revolution came at an opportune time for me. During the middle to late 90s, Object Mentor was helping quite a few companies with object-oriented (OO) design and project management issues. We were helping companies get their projects done. As part of that help, we instilled our own attitudes and practices into the teams. Unfortunately, these attitudes and practices were not written down. Rather, they were an oral tradition that was passed from us to our customers.

By 1998, I realized that we needed to write down our process and practices so that we could better articulate them to our customers. So, I wrote many articles about process in the C++ Report. These articles missed the mark. They were informative, and in some cases entertaining, but instead of codifying the practices and attitudes that we actually used in our projects, they were an unwitting compromise to values that had been imposed upon me for decades. It took Kent Beck to show me that.

The Beck Connection

In late 1998, as I was fretting over codifying the Object-Mentor process, I ran into Kent's work on Extreme Programming (XP). The work was scattered through Ward Cunningham's wiki and was mixed with the writings oil many others. Still, with some work and diligence I was able to get the gist of what Kent was talking about. I was intrigued, but skeptical. Some of the things that XP talked about were exactly on target for my concept of a development process. Other things, however, like the lack of an articulated design step, left me puzzled.

Kent and I could not have come from more disparate software circumstances. He was a recognized Smalltalk consultant, and I was a recognized C++ consultant. Those two worlds found it difficult to communicate with one' another. There was an almost Kuhnian paradigm gulf between them.

Under other circumstances, I would never have asked Kent to write an article for the C++ Report. But the congruence of our thinking about process was able to breech the language gulf. In February of 1999, I met Kent in Munich at the OOP conference. He was giving a talk on XP in the room across from where I was giving a talk on principles of OOD. Being unable to hear that talk, I sought Kent out at lunch. We talked about XP, and I asked him to write an article for the C++ Report. It was a great article about an incident in which Kent and a coworker had been able to make a sweeping design change in a live system in a matter of an hour or so.

Over the next several months, I went through the slow process of sorting out my own fears about XP My greatest fear was in adopting a process in which there is no explicit up-front design step. I found myself balking at that. Didn't I have an obligation to my clients, and to the industry as a whole, to teach them that design is important enough to spend time on?

Eventually, I realized that I did not really practice such a step myself. Even in all the articles and books I had written about design, Booch diagrams, and UML diagrams, I had always used code as a way to verify that the diagrams were meaningful. In all my customer consulting, I would spend an hour or two helping them to draw diagrams and then I would direct them to explore those diagrams with code. I came to understand that though XP's words about design were foreign (in a Kuhnian sense), the practices behind the words were familiar to me.

My other fears about XP were easier to deal with. I had always been a closet pair programmer. XP gave me a way to come out of the closet and revel in my desire to program with a partner. Refactoring, continuous integration, and customer on-site were all very easy for me to accept. They were very close to the way I already advised my customers to work.

One practice of XP was a revelation for me. Test-first design sounds innocuous when you first hear it. It says to write test cases before you write production code. All production code is written to make failing test cases pass. I was not prepared for the profound ramifications that writing code this way would have. This practice has completely transformed the way I write software, and transformed it for the better. You can see that transformation in this book. Some of the code written in this book was written before 1999. You won't find test cases for that code. On the other hand, all of the code written after 1999 is presented with test cases, and the test cases are typically presented first. I'm sure you'll note the difference.

So, by the fall of 1999 I was convinced that Object Mentor should adopt XP as its process of choice and that I should let go of my desire to write my own process. Kent had done an excellent job of articulating the practices and process of XP, and my own feeble attempts paled in comparison.

Organization

This book is organized into six major sections followed by several appendices.

  • Section 1: Agile Development
This section describes the concept of agile development. It starts with the Manifesto of the Agile Alliance, provides an overview of Extreme Programming (XP), and then goes into many small case studies that illuminate some of the individual XP practices—especially those that have an impact upon the way we design and write code.
  • Section 2: Agile Design
The chapters in this section talk about object-oriented software design. The first chapter asks the question, What is Design? It discusses the problem of, and techniques for, managing complexity. Finally, the section culminates with the principles of object-oriented class design.
  • Section 3: The Payroll Case Study
This is the largest and most complete case study in the book. It describes the object-oriented design and C++ implementation of a simple batch payroll system. The first few chapters in this section describe the design patterns that the case study encounters. The final two chapters contain the full case study.
  • Section 4: Packaging the Payroll System
This section begins by describing the principles of object-oriented package design. It then goes on to illustrate those principles by incrementally packaging the classes from the previous section.
  • Section 5: The Weather Station Case Study
This section contains one of the case studies that was originally planned for the Booch book. The Weather Station study describes a company that has made a significant business decision and explains how the Java development team responds to it. As usual, the section begins with a description of the design patterns that will be used and then culminates in the description of the design and implementation.
  • Section 6: The ETS Case Study
This section contains a description of an actual project that the author participated in. This project has been in production since 1999. It is the automated test system used to deliver and score the registry examination for the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards.
  • UML Notation Appendices:
The first two appendices contains several small case studies that are used to describe the UML notation.
  • Miscellaneous Appendices

If I Only Bought Two OOD Books, This Would be One of Them
By Amazon Customer
I don't think I've given another design/programming book 5 stars before. This book deserves it-- it could easily replace a half dozen books on my shelf, and it probably will.
Martin focuses on the why's and the wherefores of current OOD methodologies. He doesn't try to sell Agile Processes in this book. Instead, he explains a number of current practices that might be loosely grouped under the 'Agile' name. He anchors his discussion in a set of principles that drive the design process. Then he shows how software patterns can be used to put these principles into practice.
Patterns are explained and demonstrated in the context of three case studies. The case studies (a payroll system, a weather monitoring system, and an exam testing system) have the feel of day-to-day problems. One of my chief complaints with other books has been the use of esoteric case studies-- unless I work for Microsoft, I'm not likely to write a word processor anytime soon. Okay, so maybe I won't write a weather station either, but it comes a lot closer to what I will do!
The patterns discussion in this book is down-to-earth and easily understood. I have struggled over the 'Gang of Four' book ('Gamma et Al, 'Design Patterns') for well over a year. Bob Martin's book has cut through a lot of the clutter and confusion. It has been a great help to me in understanding why, where, and when to use different patters. And the explanation of UML in the book's appendices is one of the best I have seen. I can't think of a better way to learn UML than to sit down with these Appendices and Martin Fowler's 'UML Distilled'.
This is one of the two books I would recommend to an OOD newbie. The other would be 'Object Design' by Rebecca Wirfs Brock and Alan McKean. These books provide a solid grounding in object-oriented design, while requiring a very reasonable expenditure of time and effort.

Clear, specifc, applicable
By wiredweird
The bulk of this book describes OO design principles. They're presented in a readable, useful, and well-organized way. Often they just clarify and put a name to something you've probably been doing anyway. The standard Dependency Inversion Principle is there, for one. (I'm glad to see that other people have trouble with the name. By today's reckoning, there's nothing inverted about it, but the name dates back to less enlightened times.) Others, like the Interface Segregation Principle, are less well known but reinforce lots of other good practices, such as data hiding and prevention of "interface leakage".
The "Agile" section is blessedly short, and doesn't much contaminate the otherwise good presentation elsewhere in the book. There's a lot of good to be extracted from the agility movement, but there's a lot of rabid dogmatism too. Martin managed to keep it well under control. He presented the Manifesto (ugh) early on, but that was the worst of it.
A few points marred the book, but only slightly, The drawings came across as "cute" - unprofessional and tangential to the topics at hand. Semi-fictional conversations in books like this always seem fatuous to me, and Ch.6 was no exception. The technical content managed to withstand this presentation anyway.
This book has lots of good ideas. It relates those ideas well to common and useful design patterns. A few aspects of the book tried to be funny, but came across as more annoying than anything else. That was only a few, though - the meaningful content of the book came through despite those flaws.
I recommend this book to any serious student or practitioner of OO design and implementation. I really mean "any," since even project-scarred veterans are likely to see some of their hard won knowledge set into clear text and into the context of other ideas.

Best O-O design book in this year
By Mike Meng
I knew the book would be a great one before read it. But now, after I read some of its chapters, I know I underestimated it.
I love to read Uncle Bob's books and articles. His previous book "Designing Object-Oriented C++ Application with Booch Method" is a real gem, I learn much a lot from it, maybe more than any other books on designing. The author's style is unique, he tries to guide readers to reach a good design instead of just putting the final solution in front of you. He presents the whole process of design, shows you how to think, how to verify, how to test and modify. His is a real mentor who gives you solid knowledge and solid experience by solid examples. So, I expected learn a lot from this new book.
The book shows that it's more than my expectation. It keeps the good style, plus very valuable contents. It present at least 4 aspects which are very important and useful for today's programmers:
* Agile method: The author show you you how to USE agile method. Still he tell you a lot about "Why". I'm not a XPer, but after reading the first several chapters, I think I'd give a try.
* Object-Oriented Design Principles: The book concludes 11 O-O design principles. Only these principles are worth the price of the book to me.
* Design patterns: This book teach you 23 design patterns with concrete examples -- 15 are GoF patterns, 8 are new. The emphasis is how to use patterns in real applications, instead of telling you what design patterns are and how to document them.
* UML: This book is not about UML, but it uses UML to demostrate designs. To make you feet wet, it includes two appendics, show you basic UML with, again, concrete example. I find it's much easier for me to learn UML this way.
Well, IMHO, this book is the best O-O design textbook this year, and I wonder whether there will be a better one in the next several years.

Ball Lightning and Bead Lightning: Extreme Forms of Atmospheric Electricity, by James Barry

The purpose of this monograph is to review the known physical aspects of two unusual forms of atmospheric luminous phenomena, to deduce their characteristics and properties, and to promote efforts to improve their understanding. These two forms, called ball lightning and bead lightning, have visual images that differ from the linear image associated with normallightning. The terms "balliightning" and "bead lightning" are used to denote atmospheric luminous forms which are occasionally observed and have the geometrie shape suggested by their name. Vet, it is possible that neither phenomenon may in fact be a form of lightning in the sense of a continuous electrical discharge. Bead lightning has been described as the residue of a cloud-to cloud or cloud-to-ground lightning stroke and has the appearance of aseries of luminous balls separated by dark regions, thus resembling astring of pearls, and remains visible for about one second. Ball lightning has been described as a single luminous globe appearing ne ar the ground after a lightning stroke and also remaining visible for about one second. Both phenomena remain visible far longer than normal lightning flashes.

Huang Di Nei Jing Su Wen: An Annotated Translation of Huang Di's Inner Classic - Basic Questions: 2 volumes, by Paul U. Unschuld, Hermann

A foundation of Chinese life sciences and medicine, the Huang Di Nei Jing Su Wen is now available for the first time in a complete, fully annotated English translation. Also known as Su Wen, or The Yellow Emperor’s Inner Classic, this influential work came into being over a long period reaching from the 2nd century bce to the 8th century ce. Combining the views of different schools, it relies exclusively on natural law as conceptualized in yin/yang and Five Agents doctrines to define health and disease, and repeatedly emphasizes personal responsibility for the length and quality of one’s life. This two-volume edition includes excerpts from all the major commentaries on the Su Wen, and extensive annotation drawn from hundreds of monographs and articles by Chinese and Japanese authors produced over the past 1600 years and into the twentieth century.

Only for Nei Jing freaks
By Boogey Boo
The translation is probably very accurate...but the terminology chosen makes it hardly readable most of the time. Also, the Chinese script is unfortunately not included in the text...that's the biggest drawback here! People interested in an exacting translation will also be interested in seeing the Chinese script side by side to gain a more complete understanding for themselves.

Otherwise, it's nice to have to compare with other versions of the Nei Jing for a more complete understanding. The books kind of resemble old style bibles, and there are two of them in a case.

Grimoire of Tiamat, by Asenath Mason

Tiamat is the Primal Dragon Goddess, the first one, who gave birth to the gods of the universe", the Mother of Everything, the self-procreating womb, the source of all life and all manifestation. The work described in this book was inspired by the Babylonian epic known as the "Enuma Elish", one of the oldest Creation myths in the world. The Grimoire of Tiamat presents a complete system of magick based around the Mesopotamian primordial goddess Tiamat and the eleven demons she created to aid her in her fight against the new order of gods lead by Marduk. The book is divided into three sections: first, a lengthy introduction of the theme and cosmology, followed by individual workings for each of the eleven demon-gods, and then a concluding appendix of thematically related workings focusing directly on Tiamat and Kingu. The second section, The Children of Tiamat, presents ways of working with each of the eleven demon-gods, prefaced with an explanation of the techniques that follow and the use of the Key of Night, a master sigil that is employed throughout the workings as a way to access the Nightside. The final section of The Grimoire of Tiamat is an appendix that returns the focus to Tiamat as it takes the form of a guided meditation within the waters of Tiamat, a ritual for two participants invoking Tiamat and Kingu, a rite of malefica, and a discussion of the underworld in Mesopotamian belief, followed by a chthonic guided path working.

Not for the neophyte.
By Priestess Auset Ra Amen
Hands down one of the best, if not the best occult books ever written in my humble opinion. I have a ton of occult books and none have ever had the impact on me this one did, I searched high and low and was able to find it at a decent price, the book is worth its weight in gold, on page 53 the Invocation of Tiamat will have your head feeling like its on fire and a your entire crown chakra open up wide!!! I am in awe of this magnificent book, I did change around some of the invocation to suit my needs, as I have been walking with Tiamat for years and it was her, who made sure I got a copy of this book knowing I had the keys to unlock the portals within. I would strongly urge caution when using this book, I admire the author stressing casual experimentation of the book is strongly discouraged, or you will open portals within yourself you will not be able to close. I'm going to also cosign that!! this is by far the most powerful occult book I have ever had physically make an impact upon me, just opening and reciting a Tiamat Invocation, I felt like a light switch went on behind my eyes, its like I suddenly developed night vision with red eyes, everything in my room seemed to slow down, I became aware of the blood coursing through my veins, the cells moving through my body, my ears felt like they opened up even more than the usual canine hearing I'm blessed with, I could hear a bug crawling across the carpet now this coming from a highly intuitive medium, it was like I was vibrating on another frequency, I also felt like I smoked some kush and to be clear I do not partake of the kush, so this is the power contained within this text for whoever has the keys to unlock it. I would like to thank the author Arsenath Mason for creating a book that is actually the real deal. many occult books claim to be the holy grail, this is as close to a holy grail as any human is going to get. I already feel different, as I sit here typing the fan is blowing on me and even the wind feels different, I feel like I'm in a different realm so what does that tell you?

Grimoire of Tiamat Review.
By Moonsadden
The Grimoire of Tiamat is a very thorough & researched book. It contains three parts to it, first part is of the origins & mythology of the primal dragon current, & all it's affiliated with. The second book deals with ritual practice & the nature of the entities of the Draconian race. It describes not only Tiamat, but of the natures of her consort, Kingu, & the eleven demons gods that serve Tiamat & Kingu. The third part is of appendices of various practices & application of the powers described within, from self-empowerment, spiritual awakenings, cursing & maledictions, & others as well. Overall, this book is great, the author Asenath Mason, has gone beyond the call of duty here for sure, it's the first book of her's, I've ever read, & it's great. If you're a serious occultist, &/or practitioner of the Left Hand Path, this work will amaze & fascinate you. A serious word of warning however, like the author & other occultists, such as myself, this work is NOT for all. It is very dark, very primal, & amoral, you are dealing with very, very powerful entities, that pre-exist the normal old occult practices of the middle ages, & before. Once this work is started, you CANNOT go back, the transformation you will experience, will completely change who you are as a person, & if not careful, it could be for the worse & not the better! I would absolutely recommend this opus to all who are into Mesopotamian/ Babylonian magick &/or the Simon Necronomicon, or the Sumerian creation epic known as the "Enuma Elish". Know that it is for Left Hand Path followers, but of course that is not by any means a prerequisites to read or practice the ritual system within it's pages

A must have!!!
By Stan
I really love this book!! This is a must have book for legit Left Hand Path magicians who are seeking gnosis from the Dark Gods. I really have to say that this work is not for dabblers or beginners because it can cause some serious irreversible harm to those who are not ready to free themselves from their ego or the mundane world. Those who choose to work through the book and don't substitute certain materials will not be disappointed. This book brings results because it's the real deal.

DRAGON AGE: THE STOLEN THRONE (Chapter 1)

"Run, Maric!"

And run he did.

His mother's dying words whipped him into action. The image of her grisly murder still burning in his mind, Maric reeled and plunged into the trees at the edge of the clearing. Ignoring the clawing branches that scraped at his face and clung to his cloak, he blindly forced his way into the foliage.

Strong hands grabbed him from behind. One of his mother's men, or one of the traitors who had just orchestrated her death? He assumed the latter. Grunting with effort, Maric shoved back, struggling to dislodge the hold on him. He succeeded only in getting a few more branches striking him in the face, the leaves blinding him further. The hands attempted to haul him back into the clearing, and he dug his boots into the ground, gaining a bit of purchase on gnarled tree roots. Maric violently shoved back again, his elbow connecting with something hard . . . something that gave way with a wet crunching sound and a startled grunt of pain.

The hands loosened, and Maric leaped forward into the trees. His cloak resisted, jerked him back. Something had caught on his long leather coat. He twisted and fought frantically, like a wild beast caught in a trap, until he somehow wriggled himself out, leaving the cloak torn on a branch. Maric gasped, launching himself into the darkness beyond the clearing without risking even a glance behind. The forest was old and thick, allowing only the faintest beams of moonlight through the dense canopy. It was not enough to see by, only enough to turn the forest into a maze of frightening shadows and silhouettes. Tall twisted oaks stood like dark sentinels, surrounded by dense bushes and recesses so black, they could have held almost anything.

He had no idea where he was going; only his urge to flee guided his feet. He stumbled over roots that jutted out of the uneven ground and bounced off solid tree trunks that kept springing out of nowhere. Wet and slippery mud made his steps treacherous and his balance so precarious, it seemed the ground might give way beneath him at any moment. The woods were completely disorienting. He could have been running in circles, for all he knew. Maric heard men shouting as they entered the woods behind him, giving chase, and he could clearly make out the sounds of fighting as well. Steel blade ringing on steel blade, the cries of men dying--his mother's men, many he had known his entire life.

As he frantically ran on, images kept whirling through Maric's mind. Moments ago, he had been shivering in the cold forest clearing, convinced that his presence at the clandestine meeting was more a formality than anything else. He barely paid attention to the proceedings. His mother had informed him earlier that with the support of these new men, the rebellion would finally become a force. These men were willing to turn on their Orlesian masters, she said, and that made it an opportunity she wasn't willing to pass up after so many years spent running and hiding and only picking what battles they could win. Maric hadn't objected to the meeting, and the idea that it might be risky never even occurred to him. His mother was the infamous Rebel Queen; it was she who had first inspired the rebellion, and she who led the army. The battle had always been hers and never his. He, himself, had never even seen his grandfather's throne, never understood the power his family had possessed before the Orlesians invaded. He had spent his entire eighteen years in rebel camps and remote castles, endlessly marching and forever being dragged along in his mother's wake. He couldn't even imagine what it might be like to not live that way; it was a completely foreign concept to him.

And now his mother was dead. Maric's balance was ripped from him, and he tumbled in darkness down a short hill covered in wet leaves. He slid awkwardly and slammed his head against a rock, crying out in pain. His vision swam.

From far off came a muffled answering cry of his pursuers. They had heard him.

Maric lay there in the moonlit shadows, cradling his head. It felt like it was on fire, a raging inferno that blotted out reason. He cursed himself for being so stupid. By sheer luck if nothing else, he had managed to run some distance into the forest, and now he had given away his location. There was a thick wetness on his fingers. Blood was caking in his hair and running down around his ears and neck--warm in sharp contrast with the frosty air.

For a moment he shook, a single sob escaping his lips. Maybe it was best just to lie here, he thought. Let them come and kill him, too. They had already killed his mother and earned whatever lavish reward the usurper had surely promised them. What was he, besides an extra body to be slaughtered along with the too-few men Mother had brought? And then he froze as a terrible realization settled at the edge of his consciousness.

He was the King.

It was ridiculous, of course. Him? The one who elicited so many impatient sighs and worried looks? The one for whom Mother always had to make excuses? She had always assured him that once he got older, he would grow into the same easy authority that she evinced. But that had never happened. It was no great offense, either, as he had never taken seriously the idea that his mother might actually die. She was invulnerable and larger than life itself. Her death was a hypothetical thing, something that had no actual bearing on reality.

And now she was gone and he was supposed to be King? He was to carry on the rebellion on his own?

He could just imagine the usurper upon his throne in the capital, laughing uproariously when he received the news of Maric's succession. Better to die here, he thought. Better that they put a sword through his gut, just as they had done to his mother, than to become the laughingstock of Ferelden. Maybe they would find some distant relative to take up the banner of rebellion. And if not, then it was best to let the bloodline of King Calenhad the Great die here. Let it end with the Rebel Queen falling just short of her goal--rather than petering out under the leadership of her inept son.

There was a certain amount of peace in that thought. Maric lay there on his back, the damp coldness of the leaves and mud almost comforting against his skin. The irregular shouts of the men drew nearer, but it was almost possible for Maric to blot them out. He tried to focus solely on the rustling of the leaves in the wind overhead. The tall trees stood all around him, like giant shadows peering down at the tiny figure who had tumbled at their feet. He could smell the pine, the tartness of nearby tree sap. These forest sentinels would be the only witnesses to his death.

And as he lay there, the pain in his head dulling to an insistent throb, the thought rankled. The men who had lured his mother here with promises of aid were nobles of Ferelden, the sort who had bent knee to the Orlesians so they could keep their lands. Rather than finally live up to their ancestral oaths, they had betrayed their rightful Queen. If no one escaped to inform those who had remained with the rebel army about what had actually happened, they might never know the truth. They would guess, but what could they do without proof? The traitors might never pay for their crime.

Maric sat up, his throbbing head protesting fiercely. Aching and shivering, he was wet and chilled right to the bone. Getting his bearings was difficult, but he guessed he was not far from the edge of the forest. He had stumbled only a short ways in, and the men chasing him were not far away, searching and calling out to each other. Their voices were getting fainter, however. Maybe he should just remain still? He was in some kind of a depression, and if he stayed there long enough, these men could pass him by, giving him enough time to catch his breath. Perhaps he could find his way back to the clearing and see if any of his mother's men had survived.

A sudden crunch of twigs nearby made him stop again. Maric listened carefully in the darkness for an agonizing moment, but heard nothing. The noise had been a footstep; he was sure of it. He waited longer, not daring to move a muscle . . . and heard it again. Quieter, this time. Someone was definitely trying to sneak up on him. Maybe they could see him, even if he couldn't see them?

Maric cast about desperately. The far side of the hollow he was in opened up into a downward slope. It was difficult to tell the general terrain with so little moonlight coming through the canopy. There were also trees in that direction, roots and thick bushes that would prevent him from crawling out of sight. He either had to stay where he was . . . or climb out.

A squelch of wet leaves nearby forced Maric as low to the ground as he could go. Listening closely was difficult given the muted shouting in the distance and the sound of the wind blowing high in the trees, but he could ever so faintly detect the soft steps of someone passing nearby. He suspected they couldn't see him at all. In fact, it was dark enough that his pursuer would likely end up doing exactly what Maric had done and fall right into the hollow.

Maric didn't exactly relish the idea of his enemy falling on top of him, so he cautiously tried to get up onto his feet. Sharp pain lanced through his knees and arms. There were cuts on his face and hands from the branches, and he was sure there was a gash on his head . . . but it all felt distant, as if someone else were experiencing the pain. He tried to control his movements, making them slow and quiet. Smooth. And he continued to listen for more footsteps, anxiously biting his lower lip. It was difficult to hear anything over the desperate thumping of his heart. Surely it was obvious to whoever was out there. Perhaps they were closing in for the kill even now, laughing at his terror.

Breathing deliberately, sweating despite the chill, Maric slowly pulled himself upright enough to get both his feet underneath him. His right knee spasmed, ...

Must read for true Dragon Age fans
By Sarah
I enjoyed this book. It kind of read like the games at some parts but there was enough, character development, suspense and action to keep my attention. I also loved learning about characters I had only heard about in the games. Background context is wonderful when it comes to Dragon Age as the story line and characters are so complex.

My main complaint is that the ending felt a little forced and cut-off, like we missed a chapter somewhere. However, if you're a die hard Dragon Age fangirl and gamer like me, this book is a must read, particularly if you play the first game, Dragon Age: Origins. I have to say though, I wasn't a real fan of Maric after this book. I hadn't thought about him much before this, but I wasn't impressed. Definitely gives you a bit of insight into his sons and why they are the way they are and why it was a good thing one of them "got away" so to speak. (Don't want to give any spoilers).

Love Dragon Age and feel a real connection with all the characters? Buy it. Buy them all.

The one good thing that I will say about The Stolen Throne ...

The one good thing that I will say about The Stolen Throne is that the characters were well created. It focuses mainly on four central characters. Prince Maric, who’s leading the rebellion to retake his kingdom. Loghain, who become one of his best friends… I really have no idea why because Loghain is such an unlikable character. Rowan, who is betrothed to Maric, but they act more like buddies than anything else. And Katrial, and elf bard who’s a double agent until she falls in love with Maric… Again I have no idea why, because for most of his parts, Maric does nothing but whine.

Okay… got the good out of the way, now onto the bad. The book is just flat out boring! There’s maybe two fight scenes in the entire book that are described in any detail at all. It’s really hard for me to remember anything else about the book… it was that boring! I remember David Gaider seemed to put a lot of emphasis on the chemistry between the four previously mentioned characters, but like I said before, I just don’t understand why they would even stick together.

The book has no real plotline, well rounded although boring characters, and a completely unsatisfying ending that offers no closure at all. This could have been story about an inexperienced king who grows into a great warrior and leads his rebel army against a brutal usurper, but it's not. It could have been about a heroic underdog who journeys around his kingdom in secret, rallying new followers to his cause until he finally gains enough support to challenge the invaders in open combat, but it's not. Instead it's a boring story about an immature prince trying to build relationships with the aforementioned characters. Gaider further disappointed me by completely skipped over the Battle of Riverdane that was turning point of the war, and then he did the exact same thing with the final battle where they finally killed the usurper king! The final battle was described second hand in the epilogue in a few measly sentences! I remember when I finished reading The Stolen Throne, I put the book down, and thought to myself, ‘Well I’m never getting those 16 hours of my life back!’

Bottom line, I left feeling angry and unsatisfied, and I feel I can only recommend this book to diehard fans of Dragon Age.

I was first introduced to the dragon age world through the Inquisition game, so I really wanted to learn everything I could about his world. This was a really nice way to learn a good chunk of the history of Ferelden (and a bit of Orlais), how the inhabitants interacted and what caused many of the political strife between the two countries. It also gave me necessary backstory into some rather important characters and their motivations behind some of their actions, both in the past and in the future (which is when the first dragon age game starts). I definitely would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about the history and past figures of the dragon age world
