This book is serious, it contains tons of charts which I believe to be ephemeris, but I'm no expert. Not for the faint of heart, this book had me feeling more muddle-headed then when I picked it up! Also lots of formulas including, one for converting longitude into right ascension with latitude? Whatever that means. Confusing for the layman.

A satisfactory ending to the series

Match Point, the third and final book in the Lauren Holbrook Novel series by Erynn Mangum, is a satisfactory ending to the series.

Laurie's matchmaking skills have paid off--four of the couples she's matched are now married, and it's just time before another couple gets engaged. With all her friends married and her singles' Bible study basically the couples' Bible study now, there's no one left to matchmake. What's a girl supposed to do?

While Laurie is trying to find others to play Cupid with, the friends she's matched turn on her, and play matchmaker with her and her boyfriend, Ryan. Laurie's not sure how she feels about that. One matchmaker is enough, and she's already got that role filled. To get away from the constant discussions and pressuring toward marriage, Laurie and Ryan pull a fake break-up. It's a great plan until Laurie realizes one very important thing--she's in love.

This book wraps up everything in the series. Some parts seem to drag a little, but it's got the same fun parts like the previous novels--coffee, chocolate, and chick-flick quotes. If you've read the previous two books, the third one is a must.

All about Laurie

So when I was first looking at this author (and this series in particular) I almost read this book 1st. Reason: It was SO much cheaper than the other books!! And i'm just cheap, plain and simple.

But I'm so glad I didn't. So glad I started with the 1st one and read them in order. I'm sure these are great stand alone books but much much better as a series. You love Laurie and Ryan so much by this third book that you're absolutely dying to know what happens.

So you know when you're reading a contemporary romance and all the dialogue is perfect (and completely unrealistic) between the 2 main characters? Not so here. And I actually loved that about it! I could relate so so closely to Laurie! "Love" didn't feel like what I thought it would. And my boyfriend (now husband) definitely wasn't romantic like I thought he would be. But it was still beautiful. Still honored God. And I enjoyed that the love story here was so real and "common."

Something else I loved about the book~ You got every juicy detail you wish you got in every other book. Don't you hate when you're reading a book, and finally, FINALLY at the end the couple reveals to one another that they love each other, and SMACK- The End. Sometimes you get a tiny little Epilogue but otherwise. Nada. You gruel through 400 pages to get one smile at the end and that's it. It's like looking at a gigantic birthday cake and being told you can only eat one sprinkle of it. This book is how I wish all books were. There's MORE! I felt so satisfied at the end. I mean, of course I fell in love with all the characters so I'd LOVE to read more books about all of them, but even without ever hearing more, Mangum wrote the book so well that you can already feel what beautiful things were ahead for the characters.
Reading this was like getting the gigantic birthday cake all for yourself. Al a mode. With a venti cup of coffee. ;-)

As a reviewer I get so many novels for free that I rarely buy books, but after reading the first book of this series, I had to have them all so I *gasp* spent money! Delightful reads with great movement and character development. Light-hearted and just what the doctor ordered for encouragement, chuckles, and healing laughter. The spiritual content was intrinsic to the character and tone of the book, and I found it refreshing. I highly recommend this author and the entire Holbrook Series. Sometimes subsequent books in a series are a disappointment, but not in this series! Start with book one, and read all three.

BEN DOLLER is the author of Dead Ahead, FAQ, and Radio, Radio, winner of the Walt Whitman Award. Along with the poet Sandra Doller, he has published two collaborative books. He is an associate professor of writing and literature at the University of California, San Diego.

Wicked Brilliant

Doller's book and poetics resist the surrealist non-sequiturs of so many poetry collections, ditto the painfully shallow autobiographical poems of the MAWM school (although he does have one poem where he skewers those). He engages language, sometimes to hilarious, witty effect. I had not thought that any serious writer could really use terminology from the computer/internet world without being forced and painful, but Doller succeeds, doesn't make the reader wince, although the focus is always on the language, doesn't overdo the ereferences. At the center of the book is the poem Hello, short lines (two words usually), each line footnoted, with gloss/explanation, sometimes as prose poems, but always witty, as well as a sort of history-of-the-writing-of-the-poem, slash ars poetica. I'm tempted to say an unintended consequence is that it makes reading the rest of the poems potentially exhausting: the guy can riff on just two word lines to such a degree that you just know the other poems call for similar reflection. He is teaching how to read a poem. I know I have an earlier poetry collection, Radio, Radio. I know I read it. Not sure I was prepared to be blown away like I was for this volume though.

The bold premise of Smith's anthology is that contemporary lesbian and gay culture did not begin in June 1969 with the Stonewall riots. These 14 essays by "scholars trained as literary critics" do not form a social history, but "employ the methodologies of textual criticism to 'read' the queer iconography" present in much 1960s culture. Smith's contributors cover both obvious subjectsAlesbian pulp novels, the British playwright Joe Orton and Mart Crowley's The Boys in the BandAand surprising ones: Valerie Solanas and the S.C.U.M. Manifesto, Dusty Springfield's career and the homoeroticism of Jim Morrison. Smith's instinct that representations of homosexuality were not only prevalent in 1960s culture but clearly set the stage for the gay liberation movement is persuasive, and her choice of topics expands the parameters of how "queer culture" is conceptualized. At their best, the essays make astonishing, even brilliant associative leaps. In "Give Us a Kiss," Ann Shillinglaw links surrealism and sexual alienation in her dissection of the homoeroticism of the Beatles film A Hard Day's Night. In "Myra Breckenridge and the Pathology of Heterosexuality," Douglas Eisner uses New Left politics and feminism to explicate Gore Vidal's work. Unfortunately, many of the essays are shot through with the jargon of postmodern critical theory ("Solanas's attempt to resignify 'scum' in her manifesto must take into account its previous use by dominant discourses"), which may diminish the readership for this notable collection of essays.
