This is not a big book, but it packs punch. The author is the famed "Sufi saint of the twentieth century" whose posterity is better deserving than that. The English is superb, the topics vital. The publisher is serious and mainstream. There is surpassingly little in the way of Qur'an commentary available in English. This represents a contribution in a limited but essential sense. The commentary is highly esoteric and accessible perhaps only to those with a working knowledge of Sufism. For such people it is a gem. Wahhabis and Salafists steer clear!

About the Author
Maria Litvin has taught computer science and mathematics at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, since 1987. She is an Advanced Placement Computer Science exam reader and Table Leader and, as a consultant for The College Board, provides AP training for high school computer science teachers. Maria has received the 1999 Siemens Award for Advanced Placement for Mathematics, Science, and Technology for New England and the 2003 RadioShack National Teacher Award. Prior to joining Phillips Academy, Maria taught computer science at Boston University.

Maria is co author of C++ for You++: An Introduction to Programming and Computer Science (1998), which became one of the leading high school textbooks for AP Computer Science courses, and of the earlier editions of the Java Methods books. Maria is also the co-author of Be Prepared for the AP Computer Science Exam in Java (since 1999) and Mathematics for the Digital Age and Programming in Python (Skylight Publishing, 2010). Since 2014, as a Code.org "affiliate," Maria has trained dozens of New England elementary school teachers in teaching elements of computer science to children in grades K-5.

Gary Litvin has worked in many areas of software development including artificial intelligence, pattern recognition, computer graphics, and neural networks. As founder of Skylight Software, Inc., he developed SKYLIGHTS/GX, one of the first GUI prototyping and development tools for C and C++ programmers. Gary led in the development of several state-of-the-art software products including interactive touch screen development tools, OCR and handwritten character recognition systems, and credit card fraud detection software. Nothing Personal

Ryan McKay has a monumental problem. He has to get married within five hours or lose control of McKay Corporation. Feeling there was no other choice, he asked his ever-loyal assistant, Faith Lewis, to play the role as his wife. They only have to be married for a year, but she has to give him a child naturally. Faith had always found her employer very attractive, but she didn't know if she could spend a year with the man and not involve her heart. She knew she had nothing to offer him as she had spent her entire life trying to blend in with the woodwork. Her mother never missed an opportunity to tell her that she was plain, and would never be remarkable to anyone. Knowing he had no capacity to love anyone, she was worried about how she would maintain her distance from him emotionally without getting her heart crushed.

Ryan thought Faith was attractive under all her camouflage, and couldn't believe the transformation in her as they said their vows. Even though their marriage was going to be in name only, she had transformed from the baggy clothes women she was hiding, into Cinderella. He couldn't figure out why she worked so hard to hide herself from the world, but he was going to figure it out.

They found settling into married life difficult as they had the world looking in not to mention his cousin James and the company attorney monitoring their every move. It surprised Ryan how attracted he was becoming to Faith, the feelings growing stronger every day. It was no longer just a business arrangement for them, but he promised her they would not have sex for two months so she could get to know him and feel comfortable. When they finally gave into lust, it surprised and scared them both. As they struggled with their emotions, and the attachment that grew, enemies conspired to separate them.

I really enjoyed this book! Ryan and Faith make a very likeable couple, and the characters are well written. People that never put them first subjected them both to dysfunctional parenting, and they suffered for it. Trust is extremely difficult for both of them, and they give it reluctantly. Emotional story that will pull at the heartstrings. A very worthwhile read.

Fun to read. I enjoyed reading about Faith's and Ryan's issues and how they overcame them. Ms. Burton is now on my authors-must-read list. Looking forward to reading another one of her books!

A bit of a throwback and I mean that in a good way

Nothing Personal is like a throwback to a bygone era of romance novels and I mean that in a good way.

Ryan McKay and Faith Lewis get married because he needs to get married to keep his company and she's the loyal assistant who is willing to do whatever is needed to help him. It helps that she's sort of in love with him too.

Of course, the marriage is supposed to be "nothing personal". Just a marriage for a year, get pregnant (hopefully), and then separate.

This being a romance, the reader already knows the ending, but I was surprised how tame the writing was. Given that this is the same author who wrote Riding Wild (Wild Riders), I expected a lot more in the steam department, but perhaps Ms Burton wanted a change of pace and with Nothing Personal, it was definitely a change of pace.

I would have given this novel a four-star rating because I did enjoy it, but I do have to admit that I felt like I never really got to know the characters as well as I would have liked.

As cliched as it is, I like the marriage of convenience plot device and Ms Burton does a nice job of pacing so that our hero and heroine work towards their "big night". And I don't mind that the "misunderstanding" that all romances are required to have wasn't much of an misunderstanding.

Yet, there was something lacking. I can't put my finger on it plotwise, so I have to conclude that I just didn't quite connect with Ryan and Faith. They are nice characters, but I have to admit that Ryan's dastardly cousin had more charisma than he did. If Ryan and Faith had been developed just a little more, I think this would be a 4-star read.

That said, I did enjoy reading the novel. It wasn't earth shattering great, but it was a pleasant way to relax for a few hours.

A word-by-word copy of the author's previous book, rather deceiving.

This book is a word-by-word copy of the author's previous book "Windows 8.1 Apps with XAML and C# Unleashed". The only difference I've found it's an update image and the word "universal" prefixed to the word "apps" throughout the text, the rest is identical. If you have bought the previous one, you really don't need this, otherwise is undeniably a good book Pretty deceiving, though, I've been waiting for this book for some time and was expecting a real presentation on Universal applications and how to write good apps for both Windows and Windows Phone.

I got the Kindle version, I hope it was not a mistake in digitizing the book, but for now I've returned it.

Not really what I was expecting...

This book had a nice first chapter, it had a nice example project and I like when books explain something and give you something to do or shows you how to follow some sample code. So I was exited to continue reading... read chapter 2, 3, 4... boring!!! No other chapter has an example project. It just shows you the controls a bit of code and moves on. Nothing you could not fire google, search and read about it.

Now since this is book is about Universal apps I was expecting more on how to share and re-use code (at least one chapter). Nope nothing major or an example project... Strange. Now the author did call out that MVVM was not used in the book but I think at this stage in the game the code should revolve around MVVM. But again the author did call it out on the description so cant say I was not warn.

Anyway in my opinion try to stay away from this book. There are better books or material on the internet that really brings something to the table.

The more universal your app, the more you would want to
improve the testability and reusability of your code.
Just rehashing the mechanics of developing a windows app
seems insufficient.

A Valuable Survey for New Developers

I took Professor Laboon's Software Testing course at the University of Pittsburgh and loved it. So I was excited to pick up his full book on the topic.

Who I think this book is for: If you're new to professional software development - maybe a CS or dev bootcamp graduate in your first full-time job - this book is a great resource. While the book is sprinkled liberally with Java code snippets, the survey format means that pausing to dwell on, say, the many different flavors of JUnit assertions would be untenable. If you are looking for a tutorial-style approach, consider supplementing this book with something like Sandi Metz's Practical Object Oriented Design in Ruby or Kent Beck's TDD by Example.

It's not Photoshop Elements 7

Don't make the mistake I did when I saw Photoshop 7 and thought it was Photoshop Elements 7. Although an excellent book, it is over 7 years old and most techniques can't be followed in Photoshop Elements 7.

Extremely useful for learning cool stuff in a fun way.

There are two kinds of Photoshop books I buy, large expensive reference books (usually one per version I upgrade to) and specific technique books. The reference tombs I refer to when I’m trying to get something done and can’t figure out how to do it. They aren’t fun, but do provide needed guidance. Then there are the books (like this one) that are fun to sit down with and learn as I actually work on images. By the time I had done about a quarter of the techniques in the book I found that my Photoshop skills had really grown in areas that I’ve always found confusing before. And in several cases I found better ways to do stuff that I thought I already knew a lot about.
I usually don’t have much use for the CD’s that come with books, but this one has the before and after example pictures for each of the techniques, and I found it really helpful to open the actual files that the examples use and work through the steps, seeing the changes as the image is transformed. On the other hand, why anyone would want to use the trial version of Photoshop included on the CD, I can’t imagine. But the whole book is on the CD as an e-book, and that makes it possible to do some cool searches.
Overall I’m really impressed with what I was able to get out of this book, and with the enjoyable way it’s all presented. Lots of creative techniques, good background details about what the controls in dialog boxes do, and a painless workout of Photoshop’s more complex and powerful functions. Definitely a cool way to learn about Photoshop 7.
