An Inspirational and Spiritually Enlightening Book

The Godfile is a wonderful "how to guide" to help the religious seeker find a way to get closer to their own unique ways to connect to God. The concept of the book is to explore activities to help Jews who may have difficulty feeling "religious" when they walk into a synagogue and see other people praying but they may feel disconnected. Rabbi Aryeh Ben David's book helps the reader to learn ways to get more in touch with their inner soul. Aryeh Ben David does not preach or sermonize but rather gently takes the reader on a journey that helps to enlighted and inspire.

A Wonderful Spiritual Guide!

Prayer can seem inaccessible, problematic, difficult, challenging or simply meaningless. One wonders: Am I doing it wrong? Am I saying the words correctly? Why aren't I feeling anything? Is anyone listening?
In his wonderful and inspiring book, Aryeh Ben David offers ten models of approaching prayer, based on approaches of ten great Jewish thinkers. And he makes it clear that the experience of prayer is different for different people; it can even vary at different moments of our lives. Indeed, it should.
Examining these models and reading Rabbi Ben David's charming and insightful stories from his own experience made me examine my own approach to prayer and my conceptions of God. In language that is simple yet deeply profound, he helps the reader to examine Judaism, prayer, and what it all means. The powerful book helped reinvigorate my own prayer experience and gave me much to ponder. (His insights are equally valuable and accessible to non-Jews!)
I recommend THE GODFILE to anyone who takes prayer seriously, and in particular anyone who finds it challenging. You can't help but walk away changed and enlightened by Rabbi Ben David's open, warm and insightful book.

Thought provoking & entertaining

Aryeh ben David has given a tremendous amount of thought (& feeling) to the questions raised by prayer: What is it? How can a person approach God? What is the purpose of prayer? Serious as these questions are, he has found an accessible way -- or rather ways -- to approach prayer with real integrity. He deals with prayer both as an idea and as an actual practice. There's no dumbing down of the topic but no arcane esoterica, either.
Ben David's unique approach is to present the prayer ideologies of ten great Jewish thinkers. Each ideology is accorded its own chapter. In each chapter, he explains who the featured Jewish thinker was and how he approached life and prayer and then -- here's where it gets interesting --the author offers practical exercises designed to help the reader try out the featured thinker's approach to prayer.
Whether you think you already know everything there is to know about prayer, or would just like to know how to start, this concise volume will start you thinking in new ways about yourself and your relationship to God. And you don't have to be Jewish, either.
