About the Author
SHEILA DHAR (1929 2001) studied at Hindu College, Delhi, and obtained her MA in English (with the highest distinction: summa cum laude) from Boston University. Though she wrote essays and stories with a skill possessed only by the rarest of raconteurs, the passion of her life was Hindustani classical music, which she performed, studied, and wrote about with profound insight and an uncommon wit. She served on the board of the Sangeet Natak Akademi and was advisor for music to the Indian Council of Cultural Relations. Married to the economist P.N. Dhar (who was for many years Indira Gandhi s closest advisor), she also had occasion to observe the workings of India s bureaucracy and political elites. She turned her pen on them with equal facility, summing up the pomposity and stupidity of babudom through incomparable real-life stories that are unlike anything written in modern Indian English. Sheila Dhar s books include Children s History of India (1961); This India (1973); and Here s Someone I d Like You to Meet (1995).

Part Of The Culture Wars

This book and Mr. Goldman's book about Elvis Presley both seem designed to depict these men as abusive, self-indulgent intellectual fly-weights whose contributions to popular culture are minimal at best. I think that many were outraged about this book because it shattered the John & Yoko myth. We all know the story about the first time they made love and the househusband bit in the last years of Mr. Lennon's life. Both were fabrications for public consumption,as this book and others makes very clear. Tony Bramwell's book Magical Mystery Tours indicates that the couple had split up at least once before they supposedly had ever been together. And Fred Seaman's excellent memoir, The Last Days Of John Lennon, details Ms. Ono's plan to divorce Mr. Lennon until she heard that he was at last planning on making another album and returning to the public spotlight. The voluminous and detailed information in this book is good, but the author's attitude is not.

Peculiar

This book contains material about differential geometry that is very hard to find in any other book, if possible at all. However for people who feel uncomfortable with different approaches of what they already know, a word of warning is in order: the book builds everything on 5 axioms about parallel structures in bundles. All other approaches (frame bundles, connections e.t.c.) are deduced later in the book. Five axioms might take a hard-swallowing and the trade-off is that they mimic the intuition for Euclidean spaces. Of course any serious reader will not expect to learn differential geometry from one book, so overall it is a useful addition to your collection. Finally, looking at the size of the book and the material it covers you can expect the text to be pretty dense and this is actually the case. Several books on smooth manifolds are suggested in the beginning as companions and Warner's book, which is cited consistently for background results, is a prerequisite for this book.

A Unique Differential Geometry Text

Walter Poor's text, Differential Geometric Structures, is truly unique among the hundreds of currently available volumes on topological manifolds, smooth manifolds, and Riemannian geometry. Poor's book offers a treatment of Fiber Bundles and their applications to Riemannian geometry that goes well beyond a cursory introduction, and it does so while assuming minimal background on the part of the reader. I am unaware of any book that directly rivals it.

Eventually, any serious student of Riemannian geometry will want to study fiber bundles. I will appeal to authority to support this claim; in the opening to Chapter 11 of his highly respected graduate text, Differentiable Manifolds 2nd ed., Lawrence Conlon writes:

"A good command of the theory of principal bundles is essential for mastery of modern differential geometry (cf. [22], [23]). In recent years, principal bundles have also become central to key advances in mathematical physics (Yang-Mills theory) which have in turn generated exciting new mathematics (e.g. S. K. Donaldson's work on differentiable 4-manifolds [7], [11]). This chapter will be a brief introduction to principal bundles."

Conlon's citations [22] and [23] refer to the two-volume set Foundations of Differential Geometry I & II by Kobayashi and Nomizu, considered for many years the definitive introduction to Ehresmann's theory of connections on principal fiber bundles in book form. Many readers have struggled with these two volumes since their appearance in the 1960s; the learning curve is steep because Kobayashi and Nomizu assume that their reader is already familiar with the material covered in the books by Chevalley (The Theory of Lie Groups), Steenrod (The Topology of Fiber Bundles), and Pontrjagin (Topological Groups), among others. It is clear that a more accessible study of fiber bundle theory would be widely appreciated. But despite the importance of bundle theory to modern geometry, it is surprising how few of the standard texts offer more than a brief introduction.

Poor's book is the exception. It offers a solid introduction to bundle theory that is accessible to any reader who has had a first course in the theory of smooth manifolds. In the Preface, Poor states:

" The prerequisites are the basic facts about manifolds as presented in the books by Auslander and Mackenzie, Boothby, Brickell and Clark, Hu, Lang, Matsushima, Milnor, Singer and Thorpe, or Warner;....."

The preceding list of references includes many popular texts that were available in 1981 when Poor's book was published. Readers today may well have taken a first course in manifolds out of any one of a number of more recent texts; I still recommend Boothby's book to all of my students because I think it remains one of the clearest and most thorough introductions to Riemannian geometry available to this day. Others may have different choices. But the point is that an introductory course in smooth manifolds is adequate preparation for studying Poor's book. I would respectfully suggest, however, that a reader who has also studied (the pre-bundle version of) some elementary Riemannian geometry (Riemannian metric tensor, Levi-Civita connection, Riemann, Ricci and scalar curvature tensors, geodesics, etc.) will stand to benefit more from Chapter 3 in Poor, in which the bundle approach to furnishing a manifold with a Riemannian metric is studied.

I should remark that Poor states in his Preface that almost all references to elementary manifold theory refer to Frank Warner's book, Foundations of Differentiable Manifolds and Lie Groups; he has also followed Warner in most of the basic notation in the book. It can therefore be helpful to have a copy of Warner on hand when reading Poor's book; at the time of this review, Warner's book, first published in 1971, is still in print.

A list of the chapter titles in Poor's book may help inform the prospective reader who is considering buying it. As the titles reflect, after an introduction grounded in fiber bundle theory, Poor proceeds to study many of the topics found in standard differential geometry texts: Killing fields, bi-invariant metrics, complex manifolds, holonomy, etc. Poor also writes about some topics found in relatively few of the standard texts, such as Chern's formula for the Laplacian, Cartan connections, and spin structures. I have included page numbers to indicate the length of each chapter; these page numbers come from the 1981 McGraw-Hill hardback edition. The new Dover edition appears to be paginated differently.

It is extremely gratifying to see Poor's 1981 book once again available through Dover. This book seemed to fly under the radar when it first appeared; for some reason that I never understood, it was not cited one tenth as often as it deserved. For readers who have the prerequisites in hand, Poor's book is an extremely accessible and well written introduction to fiber bundles in Riemannian geometry and additional topics as discussed above.

A very helpful book

I have been using this book from the First edition.
I consider it a very useful book for a Differential Geometer
The treatment of parallel transport is hard to find in other books of the same
level.
Also it has been very helful as a reference when we have been using a different
book. Sometimes, the expositions on connections is too dogmatic and you do NOT see
the important idea behind the "abstract" definition.This book fill a gap.
I liked the treatment of "Lie group structures in Spheres" difficult to find in
most of simimilar books.
I general is a book that I recomend and it has been appretiated by several geometers friends

Great Start to a New Series!

I really enjoyed this book. It's set in the small town of Middlemarch where the men outnumber the women. The town council (made up of panther shifters) thought of having a "love train" bring women to their town and participate in a singles dance. The idea was that some of the young men would find a mate and settle down, thus not causing any more hijinks that would bring attention to them.

Saber is the the older brother to his four siblings causing the trouble so at the dance he doesn't expect to find a woman who makes his panther purr. Little does he know the woman, Emily has a lot of emotional baggage she has been trying to work through and only planned to attend the dance for a one night stand. Emily's deceased husband inflicted a lot of emotional and verbal abuse so she thinks she is done with men until she meets Saber.

I really enjoyed the story idea, I thought it was a fresh way for a shifter to meet their mate. I instantly felt the spark between Saber and Emily and was rooting for their happily ever after. I also liked Saber's younger brother's, I can't wait to read their stories.

The was a pesky reporter that is nosing around because of "alleged" panther sightings and she is trying to get proof but other than that not much comes from her part in the story. Perhaps more will come of it in later installments of the series. I really want to know if she finds out the truth and exposes the shifters or something else happens with her.

I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more in this series.

After emerging from her chrysalis of painful memories, Emily Scarlet sets out to prove she has what it takes to attract a man and experience one perfect night of passion in this captivating paranormal romance.

Saber Mitchell’s brothers are out of control, so he hopes to get them mated and settled and the reader can’t help but get caught up in the story as Saber’s plan goes a little off course when he spots Emily. The chemistry is a hot bed of intoxicating passion and the sex scenes are scorching but this relationship has a problem, due to Emily’s past and personal demons, she’s determined to keep it at the sex only stage which causes a bit of emotional angst. These strong compelling characters captivate readers while the well written, fast paced and smooth flowing plot draws readers in.

Shelley Munro has created another sexy feline world with a small community setting that makes a perfect backdrop for these shifters and it has a bit of a fun and promising hook as Middlemarch has a shortage of women but they have come up with a way to change that and I can’t wait for my next visit to Middlemarch to find out who meets their mate next.

I absolutely loved this book! It's the beginning book of the Middlemarch book series by Shelley Munro. Yes, it's been redone and spruced up, it even has a new chapter. Plus, I think she's added more than that to it, so now it's even better! I loved the fact of the Love Train bringing females to a town where there are too many males. Saber is a black panther and his brothers are out of control. So he and the other members of the Feline Shifter Council decide to have a dance bringing females from out of town so the younger males can find mates and settle down. Only Sabers in for a surprise, a surprise by the name of Jo (or should I say Emily). Ms. Munro writes with a sense of humor, you'll find your mouth twitching or out and out smiling while reading her books. You just can't help it! Recommend to all you shifter lovers out there! If you like smoking hot shifters, steamy love scenes, with a good plot written with a sense of humor you'll love her writing too. Not sure how long she'll have it on KU, so don't wait too long to read and decide if you want to buy it for your personal collection. It's a great series!
