We see Paul's family though his youthful eyes -- with all its foibles and fun

I just saw the film Philomena and was troubled once again by that severe Catholic world that I grew up in--where many "celibate" priests felt free to molest small boys while threatening the rest of us with fire and brimstone for having a sexual thought--and where your life was ruined if you were an "unwed mother."

These Memories of a Catholic Boyhood are a different look at that world. It's written by my oldest brother Paul, poking around for the fun he can find in that world--lovingly describing the humor and the joie de vivre of his moving-man Grandpa Sweeney, who make up his own fractured Latin incantations, taking us on his long hikes he took with saintly Uncle Bernard and communing with the birds and the woods (where the writing becomes poetic) . Paul uses the dark shadows in his world, and there are plenty, as a backdrop as he keeps digging for what strikes him as making like worth living and fun.

Fortress of American Catholicism in its Heyday

Set in the mill city of Fall River, Massachusetts, replete with its Catholic enclaves, Professor Paul Fletcher’s delightful reminiscence strikes a responsive chord for those, like me, who shared a similar and formative experience while growing up in an Irish-Catholic setting in the mid-20th century when the Church permeated nearly every aspect of our lives. Fletcher’s stay in a Catholic seminary adds depth and understanding to his vivid recollections. This well-written book transcends the confines of Fletcher’s fascinating family to provide a revealing portrait of ethnic (and Fortress) American Catholicism in its heyday. He preserves for us an era and an ethos that has vanished, never to return.

In the Memories of a Catholic Boyhood, Paul captures Fall River and his families past with such grace. The stories told bring you to the cold stoic churches of the east coast with the lightness of Pauls many experiences growing up in a large Catholic family. Himself persuing a carrier in the church up untill he was diagnosed with TB. In the hospital he meet and feel in love with sweet Louise who later became his wife and mother to his seven children. I higly recomend this book. The fluid story telling bring threw strenght, and laughter.

The commercial success of Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace and Dreaming War shows that Vidal's Jeffersonian anti-imperialism is fashionable again with the left wing of the book-buying public. In time for the election season, Vidal has dashed off three rambling anti-Bush diatribes and collected eight articles from the Nation, Esquire and other magazines, written from 1975 to 2004. Many of the selections take the form of mock State of the Union addresses, and while Vidal's consistency over the years is admirable, reading 11 variants of the same stump speech becomes monotonous. Vidal typically includes denunciations of Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt and Truman for their part in constructing America's "National Security State." He believes that the Cold Warriors invented a phony Communist bogeyman and that "Israeli fifth columnists" such as Norman Podhoretz control America's policy in the Middle East. Vidal would end the war on drugs and nationalize health care and natural resources. And he would change the Constitution to make America a parliamentary democracy and break the monopoly of what he calls the "Property party," with "its two wings: Republican and Democrat." Vidal is at his most convincing and entertaining when he's jeering at democratic pieties about America, which he believes is actually an oligarchy run by a military-industrial-financial elite that he calls "the bank." Vidal may be in tune with the zeitgeist again because his polemical writing resembles the new blogger punditry: conversational, tart, fervent, digressive, susceptible to idiosyncratic theories but capable of worthwhile provocations.

Like Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace (2002) and Dreaming War (2003), this final volume in Vidal's trilogy attacking the "Cheney-Bush junta" contains some new analysis padded out by previously published essays (most of these are from the 1980s). This time, Vidal tackles the American imperial impulse, placing the Cheney-Bush wars in Iraq and Afghanistan in the context of America's 1846 seizure of California and the later annexation of colonies in the Pacific. Vidal's vast knowledge of American history and his blazing wit set him apart from the other Bush bashers, and even his old stuff will be fun to read for those sharing his point of view. Some of the material is dated, though, such as an analysis from 1985 of Reagan's Christian apocalypticism, which never really gets connected to imperial America or its current leaders. And the book's organization leaves something to be desired; some observations are repeated almost verbatim 100 pages apart. Still, Vidal's fierce, vitriolic voice remains relevant. The highlight of the book is the opening essay, a scathing critique of what Vidal calls Cheney-Bush's "hijacking" of the election and their subsequent administration, and so it's a bit disappointing that most of the material here is older. Vidal's historical analysis is often fascinating, but fellow Bush-bashers will wish for more current intelligence. John Green

He is angry at injustices, power-mongering, greed and stupidity.
In the old days, Vidal would be like John the Baptist or some sage trying to make people listen and change.
But in today's human realm, perhaps his voice is not taken seriously.

"Power Corrupts, and Abosolute Power Corrupts Absolutely

Gore Vidal's anthology titled IMPERIAL AMERICA is an anthology of essays written between 1980s and c. 2004. While these essays may seem dated to those with short memories,the theme of unbridled power, media lying, and the outer limits of hypocrisy are the same even though the "actors" are different.

Vidal cites historical anecdotes and comments from the Founding Fathers about the perils of political power. According to Vidal, American drive toward imperial power and central power began with the Civil War or the War of Southern Secession or the War of Southern Independence. The basic synamic of this war was that Northern Bankers made considerale money and have ever since became more greedy and powerful.

Vidal's description of the Spanish-American War includes the bloody suppression of the people of the Phillipines who were promised independence in 1898 only to have such promises and oaths revoked. The subsequent war of suppression which probably lasted from 1898 to 1902 costing over 200,000 lives.

Vidal's description of the Cold War is as clear a presentation of trends and events as this reviewer has read. What U.S. authorities could have gained by policy, they tried to get by military force. Vidal explains that the reasons for this use of force was/is to enhance arms executives, oil executives, and bankers at the expense of U.S. taxpayers.

Many times U.S. citizens are not alert to the "Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace" trends because journalists and yes, historians repeat the same distortions and lies. Due to corportate executives controlling newpapers and other media sources, journalists, and academicians have "sold their soul" to please corporate masters and bankers. If one reflects on sensationalist news stories for the past 60 years, he/she will discover that most of these stories were lies, exaggerations, and distoritions. When some honest historians corrected any of these distoritions, the corrections got little or no attention. Or, anyone who made such an honest effort was badly smeared by "offical panals" of liars in the absence of the person in question. In fact, this is exactly what happened to Vidal himself. The montior of the panal was Roger Mudd (Mud?) who made all sorts of accusations against Vidal when Vidal was not on the panal to defend himself. The fact is Roger Mudd is a coward.

Vidal gives clear evidence of unbridled power and hypocrisy. He also suggests means of ending the corrpution of a centralized police state. He suggests a return to the concept of federalism and uses the examle of the Swiss. Notice the Swiss stay out of war and have high living standards. Vidal suggests that U.S. citizens could locate in areas that satisfy their cultural and social preferences.

One feature of Vidal's essays that should catch readers' attention is his criticism of the U.S. Supreme Court justices whom Vidal accuses of giving legal sanction to what is otherwise illegal and unconstitutional. This trend has only accelerated since the 1980s, and Vidal presents brief but concise explanations of these Supreme Court decisions.

While some may think some of these essays are redundant, they need to be. Those with short memories need repeated reminders of serious problems or, as the subtitle of the book reads REFLCETIONS ON THE UNITED STATES OF AMNESIA. Vidals depth of knowledge and writing style make these essays well worth reading.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS

HåKON WIUM LIE is the CTO of Opera Software. His job is to make sure Opera remains a better, smaller, and faster browser than the one you know. Before joining Opera in 1999, Håkon worked at W3C, where he was responsible for the development of Cascading Style Sheets—a concept he proposed while working at CERN in 1994. Håkon holds an MS degree in visual studies from the MIT Media Lab.

BERT BOS, along with Lie, was one of the original authors of CSS. He joined W3C in 1995 to launch its internationalization activities and currently coordinates its style sheet activities.

Cascading Style Sheets, Third Edition, Designing for the Web

Since its introduction in 1996, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) has revolutionized web page design. Now, in 2004, most web pages use CSS, and many designers base their layouts entirely on CSS. To do so successfully requires a good understanding of how CSS works. The purpose of this book is to describe how designers can take full advantage of CSS 2.1, which is the newly released update of the specification.

CSS's journey from an idea to a specification–and then on to a specification designers can rely on–has been long and arderous. The creator of the CSS Zen Garden (described in Chapter 12, "From HTML extenstions to CSS") describes it this way:

Littering a dark and dreary road lay the past relics of browser-specific tags, incompatible DOMs, and broken CSS support. Today, we must clear the mind of past practices. Web enlightenment has been achieved thanks to the tireless efforts of folk like the W3C, WaSP and the major browser 1 creators.

Indeed, we believe the web is a more enlightened place now that CSS have matured to a stage where it can be used for advanced layouts in a range of browsers. This book will tell you all you need to know to start using CSS.

After six years, an inconsequential update

If you already have the 2nd edition of this book, don't bother purchasing the 3rd, as little of the content has changed.

Only very light edits have been made to the text. The coding examples remain the same - after six years. The order of the chapters has been slightly rearranged, and two outdated chapters (on WebFonts and aural style sheets) have been dropped. Color illustrations are used less frequently, hurting the clarity of the examples; and the page layout is not as clean. On the positive side, entries in the "CSS quick reference" (on the inside cover) now refer to the correct page numbers in the book. And of course the browser compatability charts, noting which browsers support which CSS features, have been updated: Internet Explorer 6, Firefox 1, Opera 7.2, Safari 1, and the Prince 4 CSS formatter are now covered.

If you have not used previous editions of this book, read through the comments made about the 2nd edition, as much of what was said there still applies here. This remains a decent CSS coding reference, but frankly, I refer to Elizabeth Castro's "HTML for the World Wide Web, 5th edition" far more frequently.

I have gotten each edition of this book as it came out -- giving the still valuable previous edition to the most worthy co-worker. This book (whatever edition!) is rightly regarded as one that belongs by the desk of the astute and experienced Web worker.

When the first edition came out, I rejected it for another book on CSS. I figured that a book explaining CSS by the W3C alpha geeks who *created* the CSS recommendation would be too technical and unreadable. I learned how wrong I was. Lie and Bos's classic book turns out to be one of the most readable and clear treatments of CSS you can obtain.

I can agree that if you have a previous edition, there probably is no compelling reason to update. Some explanations have been elaborated and browser compatibility is updated for Firefox. The core value remains the same: simple enough for novices, detailed enough for experts.

Given the relation of the authors to the official work of the W3C, the book speaks with an authority as no other.

Very good, not perfect

This is a great CSS guide and reference. It has something for all skill levels.

Beforehand I thought the book would only be a technical (code-centered) guide to CSS, but it turned out to contain many practical design tips as well. I would say it is useful for both beginners and advanced website designers. If you're new to CSS, this book gives a great introduction to the subject, and if you've been in the game for a while you'll most likely find there were several handy, nifty little features of CSS 2.1 you didn't know about. (I thought I knew basically what there was to know about CSS, but the book has already tought me several new and useful things.)

The book is logically laid out and divided into chapters. One very useful feature is the complete list of CSS 2.1 properties found on the inside cover, as well as the browser compatibility information listed for each property. (Although I've found the latter to be slightly misleading at times. Specifically, the book claims that Firefox understands the 'quotes' property properly, while it quite obviously doesn't.)
