Michael Main is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Colorado - Boulder. He earned his BS, MS, and Ph.D. from Washington State University.

I have one too many java books in my stock

I read a lot of confusing books by java experts that sometimes forget to go back to the simple basics when teaching simple minded readers. However, this book is for continuing readers of java who had some, but not expert training, experience in writing programs. What I liked most of this book is how he gives pointers on what to look out for while programming, and provides alternate solutions that would be better off in the long run than what general programmers tend to come up with. I also liked how he distinguished between specification and implementation to improve group/team environments (especially for large programs). His specifications before each class gave me a very intuitive idea of what is being asked rather than being confused with all that code. Once I got the general idea, I was able to under the code more. By following the convention that I described about the way he helps the readers, data structures became very clear to understand, especially when it comes to implementing such structures in Java. Its better to read this book slowly one chapter at a time than to jump into the middle, if you want to get a thorough established view of what is going on.

Good introductory book

Despite having a professor who criticized Main's approach to almost every topic (seemingly in a bid to sell more of her own book), I enjoyed this book and got much use out of it. Other reviewers here claim the example code was buggy: I rarely type in and compile sample code - I never did for this book - so I cannot comment on any errors. However, the author's website has code for almost every class in the book. I highly encourage you to check it out.
I enjoyed his discussion of the topics; he clearly explained the fundamental ideas of the topics covered in the book. One does not need to have example code to write a linked list class if one reads his clear descriptions of it. Same goes for most ideas in the book.
The weak point I thought was sorting, and this was more of a weakness of my own than the author's. Two entire chapters are devoted to searching and sorting, but I just wasn't very interested in it. However, it is a useful concept, and you get much analysis of a few common searching & sorting routines.
The best strategy to use this book is simply to read it straight through. Only quickly scan his code, to get an idea of one way to implement an idea. Read his explanations a few times until you understand the ideas and can state them in your own words. You don't need to be able to memorize Java-specific implementations of ideas from this book. You should, instead, be able to clearly explain in English the abstract ideas that are taught in this text. Recommended both for class and for learning on your own.

Good but not necessary

This books has some pretty good examples of basic data structures, ranging from LinkedLists, Tree Structures, Lists, Queues, and Stacks. The content the book provides isn't necessarily all that great through as it just kind of skims over what's really happening in the code. I'd say if you're a beginner to java and you need something to hold your hand a little bit through what each piece of code is doing this book isn't for you. If you're someone with maybe a year experience or more you'll best just fine reading through this. Although anything in this book you will never need to know, it's still a good idea to practice and understand the algorithms that are used to produce the structures.

Strategic Role of Infrastructure

This is an excellent analysis of the role infrastructure plays in large organizations, be they conglomerate or corporation, multinational or global.
The fundamental thesis advanced by the authors is that for the integrated, adaptive corporations of the future, infrastructure has the potential of being a long-term strategic enabler. For such corporations, the scale and longevity of enabling infrastructure requires that infrastructure investments continue to exhibit value way beyond the lifespan of existing strategies.
A distinction is made between short-term (current) strategies which are responsive to the immediate competitive environment and longer term strategic intent which drives for realization of a persistent vision of the future. Long-term enabling infrastructure which is expected to survive (and enable) several iterations of current strategy is legitimized by supporting the strategic intent of the corporation.
This redraws alignment, breaking alignment of infrastructure investment to current strategy and instead aligning it to strategic intent.
We, in Zurich Financial Services Group, are pursuing an aggressive strategy which builds on the concepts found in this text. We are redrawing the line between what is infrastructure and what is local, market-differentiating solution. By commoditizing fundamental components used to build such solutions, which are shifting more and more into infrastructure. Weaving together local solutions becomes much faster, much easier when the focus is entirely on local value-chain optimization.
This book is now required reading in ZFSG. We have bought literally hundreds of copies and distributed them amongst our senior IT professionals. Definitely a BUY recommendation.

REQUISITE READING for Information Age strategists.

Information technology has made possible the Information Age. Today, organizations are wrestling with the monumentally complex decisions about how to invest in this ever-advancing technology-investment decisions that are shaping the competitive destiny of corporations. How such decisions are made and how they should be made is at the heart of this book.
The central theme is linking strategy with a firm's IT portfolio: its total investment in an IT infrastructure. The authors explore four approaches to such infrastructure investment decisions, ranging from none to an enabling view that positions the firm to optimize its IT core competence in a strategically flexible manner. The authors have synthesized the approach market leaders take to leveraging IT. This books reveals how IT creates business value, and how top performing firms use IT in alignment with their current and future needs and goals. The book's concluding section addresses how to manage the IT portfolio for optimum business results. The book includes, among many of its nuggests, a useful grouping of infrastructure services into 8 management clusters.
Reading this book is a delightful educational experience; it is also REQUISITE READING for all strategists. Excellent framework for viewing/managing IT investments.

I think this is an excellent book for seasoned Information Technology managers, general managers, as well as for those just seeking additional ideas on the topic of Information Technology (IT) and it's use in business. I was looking for a book that would give me a framework for how IT could be viewed and managed within a corporation. This book accomplished that for me. I liked the approach they took by treating IT as an asset, just like any other asset on a firm's balance sheet. The book is basically a summary of lesson's learned from studying 75 firms over the last 8 years, but also provides some frameworks (drawn from their research) by which you can analyze your own firms' IT situation. The frameworks that this book offers seem to make sense and at the very least might cause you to think about IT in a different light than you currently do. At least it did that for me.
The book is easy and enjoyable to read, provided you're interested in IT. The appendices provide a couple of exercises you can use for analyzing the use of IT for your business, which might be useful.

About the Author
Alephonsion and Benson Deng and their cousin Benjamin Ajak left the Sudan in 1987, and were relocated in 2001 from the Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya to the United States as part of an international refugee relief program. Today, Alephonsian Deng attends San Diego City College and works in the Medical Records Department at Kaiser Permanente Hospital. He has spoken to many schools, universities, clubs and organizations about his extraordinary story in Africa and adapting to his life here in America. Benson Deng runs the computer and digital photography system at Waste Management in El Cajon, CA. Benjamin Ajak resides in San Diego and speaks full time to organizations and schools, sharing his amazing life and insights into surviving as a child of war and a newcomer to the U.S. Judy Bernstein is a mother, writer, Student Advisor for the Community Economic Development Department at San Diego State University, volunteer mentor and Chair of the Advisory Committee of the San Diego International Rescue Committee and co-founder of the IRC Lost Boys Education Fund. She speaks with her co-authors to community groups, temples, churches, and schools.

How children survived an adult mess

In a land where family life was everything and the most fearsome thing was a prowling hyena or lion, fire suddenly exploded from the sky. THEY POURED FIRE ON US FROM THE SKY is the vivid description of the war in southern Sudan as seen through the eyes of three little boys, Benson, Benjamin and Alephonsion - who suddenly became homeless orphans and were forced to trek across Sudan to Kenya and Ethiopia without food or water. No longer having a father to frighten away the animals or a mother to prepare food, these five-year-old boys had to figure out how to survive. In addition to the horrors brought on by nature in the form of heat, no water, no food, hunting animals, biting snakes and insects, they soon discovered that people were not very nice to boys traveling alone. Frequently their food, clothing and blankets were taken from them or they were beaten and driven away. Even their own soldiers mistreated them and they found that after surviving so much and traveling so far, they were not exactly welcome in Kenya or Ethiopia. But survive they did to come to the United States to begin life anew.

This gut-wrenching book is a real page-turner and I found myself unable to put it down, even when the stories brought tears and indescribable anger. It was a real eye-opener to read of United Nations aid gone astray as locals took the best for themselves and left the refugees starving. There were, of course, the good people who helped the refugees with food and transportation and even lost their jobs because of it. If you never believed that war could change ordinary people into selfish monsters, then this is the book for you. The book is well written, flows well, and the transitions are so smooth that sometimes I found myself going back to the beginning of the chapter to see which lost boy was telling this particular portion of the story. There were amusing sections such as when the boys were preparing to go the US and they were attempting to learn about flushing toilets. One of them didn't remember what the book instructions said and managed to flood the restroom at the airport terminal. The things we take for granted get a new life when viewed through these boys' eyes. I recommend this book for everyone in America.

It will transform you

This is a book that I was afraid would be too painful to read. Most of us will never have the experience that these 3 young men and their "brothers" have had. But it is not about pain and sorrow. It is ultimately about Hope, Family, Education and their faith in God to get them through. This is a book that will surprise you, engage you and enrage you. Thank you , Judy Bernstein and everyone who knew this story needed to be told!

Couldn't put it down

As a former NFL player, I thought I was tough. But when I read what these young boys overcame, it made me appreciate what life is really about. A friend recommended the book and after I started it, I couldn't put it down until I finished it the next morning. Their triumph over all odds is uplifting. After the tragic events of recent days, this is a must read for all to learn about the strength of the human spirit.

About the Author

William C. Cockerham received his Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley and is Distinguished Professor and Chair of Sociology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He holds secondary appointments in medicine and public health and is recipient of the UAB Connors Prize in the History of Ideas and the Ireland Award for Distinguished Scholarship. He is past President of the Research Committee on Health Sociology of the International Sociological Association and formerly on the Editorial Board of the American Sociological Review. Currently, he is on the Editorial Boards of Social Currents and Society and Mental Health. Dr. Cockerham has published numerous peer-reviewed papers in academic journals and is author or editor of seventeen books. His most recent books from Routledge are Medical Sociology, Thirteenth Edition (2015) and The Sociology of Mental Disorder, Ninth Edition (2014).

Just 10ha of Bornean rainforest can support 700 species of tree – as many as are found across the whole of North America. The island is home to as many bird species as Europe and as many mammals as Australia, including Asia’s only great ape, the orangutan. Over 5,000 of Borneo’s plant species are not found anywhere else in the world, and

500 animal species are unique to the island.’

Simply useless!

My fiancé and I have just completed our tour of Borneo. I used the Bradt guide for Africa a number of years ago and it was excellent. I purchased the guide for Borneo based on my previous Bradt experience and the fact that this edition of the guide had just been released.
I have never been so frustrated and outraged by inaccuracies and incompetence as I was by this (mis)guide book. The author claims to have first visited Borneo in the early 90's, but I find it hard to believe that she has been back since. I have compiled an unbelievably long list of errors, misleading descriptions and woefully out of date information that I shall be sending to the publisher with a request that they refund my money. I was going to make a list of the inaccuracies in this review, but as most people reading this review will not have been to Borneo yet, there seems little point.
Have an amazing time in Borneo, but please please please do not waste your time with this horrible book. The author and publisher should be ashamed.

For the thinking traveller

This guide mixes a useful range of basic travel information with a deeper perspective on the history and ecology of Borneo.It also features some lovely photographs and a few interesting illustrations. It advertises sustainable tourism options and knowledgable guides.
All in all it is a refreshingly new and different style of guidebook which still covers all the essential tourist needs.

Bradt Borneo

There aren't the usual number of guide books on Borneo; found Bradt and LP. The info in both books complements each other; one stronger in travel details(LP) and the other in general information and details on fana/flora (BRADT). I've used Bradt for Madagascar and found it very useful, so hope the same for Borneo.

He recently went to the balance of the books action at the pearly gates. The line was not in his favor (gimme two). Don't know how it worked out but word on the street was some made guy made his acquaintance and a trip South was best for his health. His book should go there too. Pssst. Youse guys didnt hear nuttin from me bout nuttin, ya hear me.
