He sticks to topics that undergraduates can deal with, and literally takes the student through each process one step at a time. . .Plus, this book is fun! About the Author
Michael K. Le Roy is a professor of Political Science and Executive Vice President and Dean of the Faculty at Whitworth University in Washington state. He received his Ph.D. in Political Science at Vanderbilt University, and he was a Fulbright scholar at Gothenburg University in Sweden. In addition to his extensive research and travel in Europe and Latin America, Professor Le Roy has studied and traveled in Central and South America. His research on civil society and social capital has been published in Comparative Politics. Michael Le Roy returned to Whitworth in fall 2002 from Wheaton College, in Illinois, where he served as chair of the department of political science. After teaching three years for the Political Science department, Le Roy accepted the position as Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty. Le Roy still teaches for the Political Science department and continues as a team member for the Central America Study-Service Program. His research on civil society, xenophobia, and the European Union has been published in the journal, COMPARATIVE POLITICS. He is also the author of COMPARATIVE POLITICS: AN INTRODUCTION (4th Edition), and RESEARCH METHODS IN POLITICAL SCIENCE (7th Edition). Le Roy won Wheaton College's faculty achievement award for excellence in teaching in 1998 and a similar award from the American Political Science Association's honor society, Pi Sigma Alpha, in 1999.
Michael Corbett received his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa. He was professor of Political Science at Ball State University, where he taught courses covering an introduction to Political Science, research methods in Political Science, and public opinion. He was the author of numerous scholarly articles and of several books: POLITICAL TOLERANCE IN AMERICA: FREEDOM AND EQUALITY IN PUBLIC ATTITUDES (New York: Longman, 1982); AMERICAN PUBLIC OPINION: TRENDS, PROCESS, AND PATTERNS (New York: Longman, 1991); SOCIAL RESEARCH USING MICROCASE (co-authored with Lynne Roberts ) (Bellevue, WA: MicroCase Corporation, 1998); and POLITICS AND RELIGION IN THE UNITED STATES (co-authored with Julia M. Corbett) (New York: Garland Publishing, 1999). Professor Corbett passed away in November of 2001 after battling cancer. His many years of service to the Research Methods book remain evident on every page and will continue for many editions to come.

Understanding the "Science" in Political Science

Microcase's workbook explains, in simple terms, how political scientists use statistics and the scientific method to explain political and social phenomena. The workbook in itself is a terrific accomplishment. The hands-on exercises, however, are what really bring the concepts home to the reader/student. Using real social and political data, Microcase leads the user through real statistical explorations. It's a great tool for teaching, makes a good independent-study course, and would be an excellent way to learn a little about the "science" in poli sci on one's own.

Not very clear on the step by step instuctions.

Trying to follow this book in the step by step instructions is like trying to follow a kid hyped up on sugar. It is a good book for reading but when it comes to the step by step instructions for creating files it is just really hard to understand. It seems like the author has ADD and just goes on a tangent talking about "TAB this and Enter that". So it is a good book to read and learn but the for computer step by step teaching guide it is just bad. You don't need to write a long paragraph on how to type YES and NO in a box.

The book was in great shape and had all its pages (which was good because when I bought a copy from my college bookstore pages were missing, and it cost twice as much). The only issue really is that the code from the software was not in the book. I would also say that this item being a book at all is stupid, all of this should be an online content that you pay 20-30 bucks for, do the worksheets, and they get sent to the class TA or professor. Workbooks are archaic in concept.
