I would say the music difficulty is around early intermediate, overall. I didn't know this when I ordered it, but there are actually 16 songs, so it's very like playing on the piano what you might listen to on a soundtrack of the background music. I fell in love with the main theme song from Howl's Moving Castle, so I really like this. Thank you!

I bought this for my daughter for Christmas, and she actually cried tears of joy!!! She was able to transpose a lot of it from piano to guitar, which thrilled her even more. Some of the pieces look a bit difficult (there's one that needs 2 people to play... FUN!) but generally speaking I'd say they're for the late beginner to intermediate player. They do sound just like the pieces in the movie!!

Another awesome use would be to copy the more difficult pieces and make beautiful paper roses for the music lover in your life. Pinterest or YouTube should have instructions :-)

A wonderful compendium...

Everyone in the field of child and developmental psychology has praised this book, which is to child psychology as the Standard Edition is to psychoanalysis. I had a copy of the third edition from my graduate training; this 1999 5th edition advances that earlier work. Every graduate student dealing with children and adolescents should have this reference volume.
I loved the chapters by Carolyn Saarni ("Emotional Development: Action, communication and understanding), whose other works I have read; by Susan Harter ("The development of self-representations"); and by Elliot Turiel ("The development of morality.") They are excellent examples of research, theory, and good writing, all at the same time.
This recommendation may sound silly, but I'll say it anyway: This is the best compendium of theory and research on the social, emotional, and personality development of children and adolescents. If you are a graduate student, this is a necessary volume. You will be asked questions from this on your comprehensive exams.

PS The production qualities from John Wiley are excellent, also. This book will hold up.

Can't Get Enough

I was given this book in an exchange for an honest review.

I was intrigued by the story from the very onset. Mr. Raven created not only a book that was unique to the erotica world of late, but a marketing strategy that combines multiple mediums and multiple authors. His example is one to be modeled, and something every Indy author should consider in my opinion. We need to build each other up as artists and build a community, not just a pool of erotica writers. That being said, I think it's clear that Mr. Raven's approach captured my heart and soul right away. He gave me imagery not only in his words, but also in the way of film, music and visual art. This helped me to connect to the story on a deeper level, and had me seeking out poems that I had not read prior to reading the excerpts that he often used to begin each chapter.
The main character in the book is a man of great privilege and great expectation. He has the chance to rekindle a relationship with his love that got away, but dark forces had other plans. Sounds familiar right. I thought the same thing when I began the book, and just begged not to be disappointed. Well, he delivered, because not only was I not disappointed, I was incredibly surprised. The forces working against Elias and Genevieve are not your ordinary dark forces, and no, they're not vampires. It's not that book. The characters were well developed, but there wasn't one character in particular that I found myself connected with. I was neither rooting for or against them as a couple, but rather, I was rooting for good over evil, and in other times, evil over good. It's not the characters that had me longing for more, it was the story. The wonder of where this story will go next, because it's rooted with history and religion, but not in an overly "Churchy" way. It had me aching for more. My thoughts when it was over, were, "No! I'm not ready, I want more!" And I got more. I got two excerpts from fellow Indy writers, and I was pleasantly surprised. While I was lost in the story, I forgot the very thing that drew me to Mr. Raven in the first place. His unique approach and his sense of community; writers supporting writers. I will forever follow the works of Mr Elias Raven for his fresh approach to story telling and to see his writing evolve. Cain, Sins of the Father, was a great first novel and I'm so honored that I was asked to read and review. I do encourage you to check this one out. You won't be disappointed.

Just WOW (my thought when I finished this book)

I am not exactly sure what I was expecting when I bought this book. By title I wasn't sure if it was going to lean more towards the Bible story of Cain or something completely different. My friends were discussing how good it was but were giving me little details (I now know why). As I started reading the book, I soon learned I was reading a wonderful story with references to the Bible Story. The story took a bit of time to develop for me but once it did, I was captivated to the point I read into the wee hours of the morning and wouldn't of stopped when; I did except I had to get a little sleep before work.

I don't do spoilers and even sitting to write this review I have stopped and started several times because everything I want to say gives away more than I think is fair to a new reader. So I will say this book does have a good love story to it; both the love of family and that of a man and his lady. The book is a suspenseful thrilling tale as well. You follow the main character, Elias Cain, as he learns not only his families epic secrets but the dark well kept secret that will threaten everything Elias believed to be it the truth. Elias comes to terms with his family duty while trying to keep his family and lady safe. Again that is putting it very mildly but without spoiling this truly magnificent thrilling tale, it's aptly put.

If I had to give one complaint it would be that it ended in a cliffhanger. I do HATE cliffhangers. However, this is one book when it ended, while I wanted to cuss the author for leaving me hanging, I understood his reason for doing so. Lucky for readers, Book 2 is due out soon. If you like suspense and thrilling storylines, this is the book for your. Well Done Mr. Raven and may I add my hat is off to you for an awesome 1st time book.

What an amazing book!!!

To be honest, I was a little skeptical about this book, since I have only read romance and erotica, and this book is a thriller.
I purchased this book after reading and thoroughly enjoying this author's poetry book, The Painted Shadows and quite frankly the wonderful cover pulled me in as well. The author's poems are so captivating that I decided to give Cain a chance, and let me tell you, ONE OF THE BEST DECICIONS I HAVE EVER MADE!!!!

How to start this review without any spoilers? Tough! ...
....Let me just say WOW!!! This book is A-mazing!!
What I love most about Cain is that you get to experience everything, all at once from suspense, mystery, love, hate, secrets, envy, rivalry, lies, second chances, love making, affection, family values, sadness, betrayal, revelations and truths. All these emotions collected together, portrayed exquisitely in a piece of art, that is this book, taking you for a journey, transporting you back to the bible times and then fast forwarding you back to the present. The love scenes between Elias and G are very passionate and loving, leaving you reading with only one hand. (Winks)

The author rewards you with literature passages and beautiful illustrations (perfectly chosen, I must add) introducing each chapter in this book, making them more exciting. The author also integrates a fusion of the traditional Cain story and his own version, a phenomenal remix, blowing your mind away and leaving you wanting more and more from Elias and G, Qaylin and the whole Cain empire.

I can't wait to follow up this story with book number two and see how each of the characters develop further, deeper.
I'm ready for this author to take me for a thrilling journey once again.

I will most definitely buy more books from Elias Raven!

Michael Main is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Colorado - Boulder. He earned his BS, MS, and Ph.D. from Washington State University.

I have one too many java books in my stock

I read a lot of confusing books by java experts that sometimes forget to go back to the simple basics when teaching simple minded readers. However, this book is for continuing readers of java who had some, but not expert training, experience in writing programs. What I liked most of this book is how he gives pointers on what to look out for while programming, and provides alternate solutions that would be better off in the long run than what general programmers tend to come up with. I also liked how he distinguished between specification and implementation to improve group/team environments (especially for large programs). His specifications before each class gave me a very intuitive idea of what is being asked rather than being confused with all that code. Once I got the general idea, I was able to under the code more. By following the convention that I described about the way he helps the readers, data structures became very clear to understand, especially when it comes to implementing such structures in Java. Its better to read this book slowly one chapter at a time than to jump into the middle, if you want to get a thorough established view of what is going on.

Good introductory book

Despite having a professor who criticized Main's approach to almost every topic (seemingly in a bid to sell more of her own book), I enjoyed this book and got much use out of it. Other reviewers here claim the example code was buggy: I rarely type in and compile sample code - I never did for this book - so I cannot comment on any errors. However, the author's website has code for almost every class in the book. I highly encourage you to check it out.
I enjoyed his discussion of the topics; he clearly explained the fundamental ideas of the topics covered in the book. One does not need to have example code to write a linked list class if one reads his clear descriptions of it. Same goes for most ideas in the book.
The weak point I thought was sorting, and this was more of a weakness of my own than the author's. Two entire chapters are devoted to searching and sorting, but I just wasn't very interested in it. However, it is a useful concept, and you get much analysis of a few common searching & sorting routines.
The best strategy to use this book is simply to read it straight through. Only quickly scan his code, to get an idea of one way to implement an idea. Read his explanations a few times until you understand the ideas and can state them in your own words. You don't need to be able to memorize Java-specific implementations of ideas from this book. You should, instead, be able to clearly explain in English the abstract ideas that are taught in this text. Recommended both for class and for learning on your own.

Good but not necessary

This books has some pretty good examples of basic data structures, ranging from LinkedLists, Tree Structures, Lists, Queues, and Stacks. The content the book provides isn't necessarily all that great through as it just kind of skims over what's really happening in the code. I'd say if you're a beginner to java and you need something to hold your hand a little bit through what each piece of code is doing this book isn't for you. If you're someone with maybe a year experience or more you'll best just fine reading through this. Although anything in this book you will never need to know, it's still a good idea to practice and understand the algorithms that are used to produce the structures.

The four studies in this book center on the Western obsession with the nature of personal identity. Focusing on the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, but with an eye toward antiquity and the present, Caroline Walker Bynum explores the themes of metamorphosis and hybridity in genres ranging from poetry, folktales, and miracle collections to scholastic theology, devotional treatises, and works of natural philosophy. She argues that the obsession with boundary-crossing and otherness was an effort to delineate nature's regularities and to establish a strong sense of personal identity, extending even beyond the grave. She examines historical figures such as Marie de France, Gerald of Wales, Bernard Clairvaux, Thomas Aquinas, and Dante, as well as modern fabulists such as Angela Carter, as examples of solutions to the perennial question of how the individual can both change and remain constant. Addressing the fundamental question for historians--that of change--Bynum also explores the nature of history writing itself.

Caroline Walker Bynum is Professor of Medieval European History, Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, New Jersey, and University Professor Emerita at Columbia University.
